I've Been There

Dads need looking after too

Being a dad is hard and it’s important to make sure you’ve got time to chill out and relax.

Try to do one fun thing each day, even if it’s small. You can do a lot of fun stuff with your baby so get them involved whenever you can. Just make sure the baby is safe!

You could:

  • Watch your favourite TV show
  • Play your Xbox or play station
  • Play a game with your baby (Peek-a-boo is a great game to build your baby’s communication)
  • Go on Facebook or call a friend
  • Go for a run, skate or surf
  • Go to a footy game

Ask your parents or friend if they can mind the baby while you go out with your mates or spend time with your partner.

If it’s hard to find someone to mind the baby, offer to look after the baby for a couple of hours while your partner goes out shopping or to see her friends.

The following week, your partner could mind the baby while you go out for a couple of hours to see you friends or to play footy.

Share the load

The most important bit is to make sure it’s fair and one parent doesn’t get left with the baby all the time!

If you share the load then each of you can have a break.

Even though your partner might not have been at work she’ll still be really tired and need help. Caring for a baby takes a lot of effort.

If you’re feeling freaked out by all the new responsibilities then have a chat to your partner, a friend or parent who has kids.

Just like mums, dads sometimes need some extra support for mental health problems during this time. Read about common mental health problems and find out where you can find some help
